Magnitude & Bond Geometry Meets Organic Flow
Magnitude & Bond is a celebration of the relationship between organic wood and precise geometric form. Crafted from elm and oak, this hexagonal masterpiece is cast in epoxy resin to create a dynamic interplay between the natural grain of the wood and the smooth resin surface. The flowing patterns in the wood are intentionally positioned to enhance the piece’s symmetry, creating an eye-catching interaction between nature and structure.
Finished to a glossy perfection, Magnitude & Bond features handcrafted MIG-welded mild steel legs, echoing the hexagonal geometry of the design while providing sturdy support. Ideal for those who appreciate both craftsmanship and modern design, this piece is sure to elevate any interior.
The name of this piece is inspired by a quote from Geraldine Brooks, and honours a dear heart, Louise:
“We are each other’s harvest;
we are each other’s business;
we are each other’s magnitude and bond”
MAGNITUDE & BOND
I used elm and oak cast with epoxy resin to create a dynamic surface. The hexagonal design was cut using a CNC router for precision. To enhance the organic geometry, I carefully positioned the wood grain to flow with the resin, emphasizing the natural patterns of the elm and oak to enhance the visual interaction between the wood and resin; between organic and geometric.
After casting, the epoxy cured to ensure a seamless bond. The surface then underwent extensive rounds of fine sanding and polishing to achieve a smooth, high-gloss finish that plays off the visual interactions between wood, resin, and geometry.
To complement this, the legs were MIG welded from mild steel for durability and to echo the hexagonal pattern. This process blends handcraftsmanship with mechanization, utilizing CNC routers, sanders, polishers, and welding tools.
